If you are craving some hot comfort food this winter, you should try this South Indian cabbage dal curry at home. The weather is turning cold in San Diego, andI love freshly prepared desi-style food for lunch.

Awarm bowl of rasam rice with cabbage kootu along with a dollop of ghee on top is absolutely divine. This simple combo is asuper comforting and soul-satisfying meal. I would devour any time of the day.

This healthycabbage dal curryis made with chopped cabbage, onion, tomato, moong dal, channa dal, curry leaves, cilantro, and spices.Cabbage kootuis a flavorful stewwith hot steamed rice, roti, chapati, and phulkas. Similarly, itis an excellent choice for everyday lunch, parties, and lunch boxes.

Kootuis a stew made of spiced lentils, vegetables, and coconut.The wordkootuis from Tamil vocabulary, which means “add,” i.e., vegetables added with lentils. You can include any type of vegetables like chayote, zucchini, cabbage, pumpkin, bottle guard, spinach, etc. Kootu can be made with or without coconut as well.

kootuhas a semi-thick consistency and is creamy in texture.Kootu is a wholesome side dish recipe and tastes very delicious with rice; it even goes well with roti and chapathi.

Cabbage dal ingredients:

Cabbage – 1 small or 2 cups chopped

Red onion – 1/2 cup diced

Water – 1/2 cup

Salt – 1 tsp/As per taste

Cilantro/Coriander leaves – 1/4 cup chopped

Red chili powder – 1/2 tsp

Coriander powder – 1/2 tsp

Turmeric – 1/4 tsp

For pressure cook:

Moong dal – 1/4 cup

Channa dal – 2 tbsp

Turmeric powder – 1/4 tsp

Oil – 1/2 tsp

Water – 2 cups

For tadka/seasoning:

Coconut oil – 1 tbsp

Mustard seeds – 1 tsp

Channa dal – 1 tsp

Urad dal – 1 tsp

Curry leaves – 10

Green chili – 1

Red chili – 1

Hing/Asafoetida – A pinch

How to make cabbage dal:

1. Wash the cabbage, slice it in half, chop it finely, and transfer it to a pressure cook container.

2. Rinse the moong dal and channa dal in water and drain the water completely. Put the dal, turmeric powder, and a tsp of oil along with the cabbage.

3. Pour 2 cups of water.

4. Boil the ingredients in a pressure cooker for 15 mins or till the dal is cooked.

5. In the meantime, heat coconut oil in a pan, add mustard seeds,let them crackle, and sautechanna dal, urad dal, curry leaves, red & green chili, and hing or asafoetida until it turns aromatic.

6. Throw in some diced onion and sprinkle some salt. Saute till the onion turns translucent.

7. Put some chopped tomato and saute. Let it cook for 5 mins.

8. Now, add the cooked dal cabbage mixture into the pan and combine it well.

9. Add red chili powder, coriander powder, turmeric powder, and salt to the dal and simmer for 10 mins.

10.Pourhalf a cup of water if the consistency is too thick. Combine and let the dalcome to a gentle boil.Stir the dal while cooking so that the lentil mixture does not stick to the bottom of the pan.

11. Mix well and boil the cabbage dal/kootu for 5 minutes.

12. Switch off the flame and garnish the cabbage dal with cilantro.

13. Cabbage dal or cabbage kootu is ready with rice and roti.
