Whip up rich, savory flavor in minutes with this DIY chicken gravy mix—an easy way to bring comforting, homemade taste to any meal.

This homemade Chicken Gravy Mix adds rich, savory flavor to your favorite dishes; it’s the perfect accompaniment for roast chicken, mashed potatoes, stuffing, biscuits, and more.

This dry gravy mix is the shelf stable version of my easy Chicken Gravy recipe and yields a total of 3/4 cup, equivalent to 4-6 store-bought packets, depending on how much dry gravy you use per batch.

Ingredients and Substitutions

Here are the main ingredients required to make chicken gravy mix. You can view the complete list of ingredients in the recipe card below.

Chicken Bouillon Powder: Knorr and Wylers are two popular brands. If you need a low-sodium version, Herb-Ox offers a suitable alternative.

Water:You can use chicken broth or pan drippings in place of the water to amplify the flavor. I highly recommend sticking to a no-sodium broth.

Cornstarch: if you prefer not to use cornstarch, use 2 tablespoons of all-purpose flour instead.

Gravy Mix Recipe

To turn the dry chicken gravy mix into actual gravy, you’ll create a roux with butter and 2-3 tablespoons of the gravy mix. Slowly add the broth and cook until the proper gravy consistency is acheived.

How to Use Chicken Gravy Mix

Here are a few of my favorite recipes to serve gravy with:

Recipe Tips and Notes

  • Adjust the spices so they suit your taste. Don’t like thyme? Use rosemary. Like gravy with a heavy garlic flavor? Add more garlic powder.
  • For thicker gravy, add more flour or cornstarch. For a thinner gravy add water, 1 tablespoon at a time, until your desired consistency is reached.
  • Most chicken bouillon powders have a high salt content. Look for a lower-sodium version to cut down on the salt drastically.
